Katarina Witt first began to skate as early as age five years old. Soon, her talents were evident and she was accepted into Karl-Marx-Stadt's special school. The coach Jutta was also at the school. Witt made her mark by finishing second in the 1982 World Championships, held in Copenhagen. Her graceful and elegant style caught everyone's attention at that time, and from then forward she began to dominate the competition. Olympic success In the Sarajevo Winter Games in 1984, Katarina won the gold medal for women's figure-skating in a highly competitive contest. Then, four years after that she was able to claim an additional tighter race. Witt actually fell short of the free-skating competition, but won the gold medal upon her results in the mandatory figures as well as the short programme. Witt became the very first time a repeat woman to win the women's figure skating after Sonja Henie. Hall of Fame Witt was allowed to resume skating after her success as a film actress. Witt competed at the Lillehammer Winter Games, 1994. Though she failed to get a single medal she delighted fans with her seventh place finish. In 1995, Witt received her induction into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame.
